FUENLABRADA SUFFER LATE CDR HEARTBREAK

Spanish Segunda Division side Fuenlabrada welcomed Cadiz to the Estadio Fernando Torres with the hope of causing a big upset in the Copa Del Rey (CDR). The two teams met at the Estadio Fernando Torres on Thursday in the round of 32 and with a place in the round of 16 up for grabs.

La Liga side Cadiz were the favourites and they needed a stoppage time goal to see off their lower league opponents. Chilean defensive midfielder Tomas Alarcon came off the bench to score the only goal of the game in the third minute of stoppage time. He scored to give Cadiz a 1-0 away win over Fuenlabrada off the assist from Spanish striker and fellow substitute Alvaro Negredo. Alarcon had come on as a 55th substitute for Danish player JonsJensson, while ex-Valencia and Manchester City attacker Negredo entered the game 24 minutes later in the place of Romanian striker Florian Andone.

Hosts Fuenlabrada came into the game on the back of a 13-match winless run in the league and the result from the Cadiz game would have done little to improve the mood at the club. On their part, Cadiz also came into the game with a six-match winless run in La Liga and they would be hoping that the late win would prove to be the catalyst for a better league form.

The reward for seeing off Fuenlabrada at the Estadio Fernando Torres in the last 32 of the Copa Del Rey is a last 16 tie with another lower league opposition. They will face Sporting Gijon for a place in the Copa Del Rey quarterfinals this season. Sporting Gijon are also in the Segunda Division. Just like what was obtainable with their last 32 tie with Fuenlabrada, Cadiz are the away team for their last 16 clash with Sporting Gijon.
