Competition good for Fernando Torres

Jose Mourinho believes Chelsea’s record singing Fernando Torres will only benefit from the club’s attempts to strengthen its forward options over the summer transfer window.

The Spanish striker and Senegal international Demba Ba were the only two senior strikers on the books of the Blues under Roberto di Matteo and Rafael Benitez last season and the club has already signed German international Andre Schurrle this summer and Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku has also returned from his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion.

Chelsea have also been involved in a long drawn and controversial chase for Manchester United and England front man Wayne Rooney and according to the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss, Torres should be happy with the situation because there is a lot of competition in the side and that is good for every player in every position.

Fernando Torres had been linked with a stunning return to Spanish football with Barcelona tracking him as a backup option for Lionel Messi and Neymar and Chelsea was also trying to use him as a makeweight in a deal for Radamel Falcao with Atletico Madrid before being snubbed by the player for AS Monaco.

The Spanish international is yet to link up with the side after being given an extended break following his participation in the FIFA Confederations Cup. He scored eight goals in the Premier League last term but his overall goal tally for the season was 25 in all competitions in what was his most successful season since his move to the club in January 2011.

Chelsea is still confident about landing Manchester United forward Rooney and hope Fernando Torres will compete with as many as four strikers for a role in the side to see whether the £ 50 million can rediscover the form that made him one of the best strikers
